Starting Out Elmhurst

Your entire mouth and teeth will feel pretty sore when you first get your braces. You may struggle with eating your favorite foods so it is recommended to avoid eating certain foods to relieve your mouth and teeth of additional pressure. Mouthwash and warm salted water (dissolve one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water and swish and gargle for 1-2 min without swalling it) help to relieve the soreness in the first few days. If the pain is constant and interferes with your life, then you can take a common pain reliever like Aspirin, Tylenol, Advile, Aleve or Motrin. Wax on the braces can also help to lessen the irritation of the mouth, lips and cheeks until the mouth is accustomed to having braces. Over time, your teeth will loosen up but it is nothing to be alarmed about. The teeth must become loose in order to move into the right position and will become sturdy again when they are in their new spot.

If your TEETH begin FEELing a little LOOSE, don’t worry; this is normal! Your braces must first loosen your teeth in order to move them into the right position. Once your teeth have been repositioned, they will no longer be loose.

The wires and bands on your braces may SOMETIMES come loose. If this happens, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can check and repair your appliance. If any piece of your appliance comes off, be sure to save it and bring it to the office with you.

You can temporarily fix the loose wire by using the back of a spoon or the eraser end of a pencil to carefully and gently push the wire back into place. If the loose wire is causing irritation to your lips or cheeks, put wax or a wet cotton ball over the broken wire to relieve the pain.

It’s up to you! In reality, the patient determines whether or not the orthodontic treatment is pleasant and quick. This is because there are some things only a patient can do….such as:

  1. keeping all teeth and appliances clean.
  2. not breaking brackets or appliances (they are strong, but they can be broken by carelessness).
  3. being on time and not missing appointments.
  4. following instructions (wearing elastics, appliances and retainers the right amount of prescribed time).
  5. continuing to see the general dentists at regular 3-6 months intervals so he can prevent any serious tooth or gum disease.

Anyone can be a super patient. It’s up to you!
